Gilera 600 Super Sport
Gilera was important in road racing throughout the first half of the twentieth century, winning 44 Grand Prix titles before withdrawing from racing in 1957. More recently, it was better known for its small-capacity scooters. But with the Supersport 600, Gilera is aiming to return to the large-capacity sportsbike market. Unveiled in 2001, the Supersport 600 is intended to be in production for 2003. Gilera will use the Suzuki GSX-R600 engine, installed in its own high-specification chassis. An innovative titanium/aluminium frame uses aerospace glue to join the titanium steering head components to the aluminium beams, permitting light weight. A large central ram-air intake in the nose cone supplies cool air to the engine at high speeds. |
