The 998 Biposto is a base model, but only in relation to the incredibly exotic 998S and 998R models in Ducati's 2002 range. Built around the WSB championship-winning 998cc Testastretta engine, the 998 Biposto was designed to challenge roadbikes like Honda's SP-2 and Aprilia's RSV Mille. The 998 uses the first generation Testastretta engine, which has a bore and stroke of 100 x 63.5mm (3.9 x 2.5in), allowing it to rev higher and produce stronger peak power. The 998's chassis is similar to the previous 996, with a steel-tube trellis frame, ?hlins rear monoshock and Showa upside-down front forks. The revised bodywork is sleeker, and loses the large air intakes on the side.

With more World Superbike Championships than all the other marques combined, the Ducati Superbikes continue to dominate the World Superbike Championship. Ever since the creation of the first 851 Superbike, Ducati Corse engineers have put unsparing efforts into pursuing an ongoing development of the Desmoquattro engine and of the Superbike family as a whole in terms of technology and performance. It is this kind of commitment that has enabled Ducati to dominate the most prestigious stock-based motorcycle championship in the world.

The ongoing EVOlution of the Desmoquattro engine spans an incredible period of time and is evidence of the superior engineering and manufacturing quality of this project, which is rightly regarded as the very foundation of Ducati's current technical and commercial success.

High revving and powerful, it gets its punch by utilizing all the Testastretta technology. Pistons are lighter by 30 grams, intake and exhaust valves are bigger by 4mm and 3mm respectively, 54mm throttle bodies larger by 4mm plus a big 100mm bore and a short 63.5mm stroke. A new high volume airbox is matched to an advanced fuel injection system derived straight from the Corse racers featuring “shower type” injectors positioned directly above the throttle bodies. Fully adjustable Showa front forks, matched to an ?hlins rear shock, keep the power on the road and you confidently in control. Components like these are normally expensive extras on other bikes, but are standard on the 998. A steering damper ensures stable and predictable steering control. Lightweight Brembo four piston calipers grab new lighter front discs ensuring positive and progressive stopping power. Gorgeous Marchesini wheels and a more aerodynamic fairing complete your 998 Ducati.
