Harley Davidson XRTT 750

Harley Davidson XR/TT 750

Earl Widman. Harley-Davidson's St. Louis dealer, assembled this particular motorcycle. He modified a Lowboy KR frame to accommodate the 748cc overhead-valve twin XR engine and four-speed transmission. Widman's son, Ron, raced this motorcycle during the early 1970s.   Sometime later, Widman sold the motorcycle to George Schott. the Harley-Davidson dealer in Lewiston. Maine, who competed on it as a drag racer. Eventually, Dan Caulkins of Decatur. Illinois, acquired the bike from Schott, installed a Sportster engine in it. and used it on the street. Finally, he put a correct XR engine in and restored it to the same condition and appearance as when Ron Widman used it in competition.
The Model XRTT-750 Road Racers had aluminum oil tanks, staggered dual exhausts. Smiths tachometers, four leading-shoe front brakes, and rear disc brakes. They raced on aluminum rims with 3x18 front and 3.5x18 rear tires. The racing department gave these machines oversized 6-gallon fiberglass gas tanks, enabling them to compete in the grueling Daytona 200-mile race with fewer pit stops for refueling. Much attention was paid to shielding the rider's left leg from extreme heat when tucked in.
